Robert Ellis Stevenson was booked into Kitsap County Jail early this morning at 12:53 a.m., November 7, after being arrested by the Bainbridge Island Police yesterday afternoon. Stevenson, 24, was taken into custody for alleged stalking, criminal trespass 1, and violation of a protection order barring him from entering Bainbridge High School (BHS) grounds.

Stevenson’s bail was set at a total of $40,000. He appeared in court today at 10:45 a.m., where his next hearing was scheduled for November 12, 2013, at 10:45 a.m.

Bainbridge Island Police Officer Gary Koon was patrolling BHS as a precautionary measure after disruptive and violent incidents there involving Stevenson began last week on October 31. A former BHS student, Stevenson suffers from mental illness and had been taken into custody by the Bainbridge Police on three previous occasions and taken to Kitsap Mental Health. Each time Stevenson was released, but his family remained concerned about his increasingly erratic behavior and refusal to accept help.

Stevenson graduated from BHS in 2007 and attended the University of Washington. Known to friends as Robbie, Stevenson was a popular kid who played on the All-Star baseball team that went to the Little League World Series when he was in sixth grade.

BHS Principal Jake Haley told me he knew Stevenson as a high school student when Haley was a teacher and coach at BHS. Haley said he had a good conversation with Stevenson this week: “I just want to be sensitive to Robert and his family. He’s a great kid, and I want him to get the help he needs.”
